Oversize Rugs

Oversized rugs solve a problem a standard-sized rug can't, filling a large open plan living or dining area without leaving awkward gaps of bare floor around the edges. This collection spans wool, polypropylene, viscose, and natural fibre constructions, so material choice doesn't have to be limited just because a room calls for a bigger footprint.

Styles range from transitional and modern designs through to felted wool and softer natural tones, in colours from grey and white through to bolder multi-toned patterns. Whichever look you're after, an oversized rug in this range is built to anchor a large room the way a smaller rug simply can't.

Because a rug this size is a bigger investment, both in cost and in how much it defines the room, it's worth taking a bit more care with sizing and layout than you would with a standard piece.

Choosing and Placing an Oversized Rug

Measure the whole seating or dining zone, not just the floor. An oversized rug should generally have all furniture legs sitting on it, or at minimum the front legs of sofas and chairs, rather than furniture floating around the edges.

Leave a consistent border of bare floor. As a general guide, 20 to 30cm of visible floor between the rug edge and the wall keeps a large rug from looking like it's trying to be wall-to-wall carpet.

Consider the room as a whole, not just one furniture grouping. In open-plan spaces, an oversized rug often needs to account for both a living area and a dining area, or a second smaller rug may work better for defining separate zones.

Check doorway and stair access before ordering. Very large rolled rugs can be awkward to get through narrow doorways or up staircases, so it's worth measuring access points, not just the room itself.

Factor in weight for handling. Oversized rugs, particularly in wool, are considerably heavier than standard sizes, which matters if you're planning to move or rotate the rug yourself down the track.

How to Care for Your Oversized Rug

Vacuum in sections rather than all at once. A large rug takes longer to cover properly, so working through it in sections helps ensure even coverage rather than rushing over the middle and missing the edges.

Rotate with help. Given the size and weight involved, rotating an oversized rug for even wear is usually a two-person job rather than something to attempt alone.

Use a properly sized rug pad. An underlay cut to match the rug's full dimensions prevents bunching in the middle, which is more of a risk with larger sizes than smaller ones.

Get professional cleaning quoted in advance for wool or natural fibre. Because of the size, professional cleaning costs and logistics differ from a standard rug, so it's worth asking about this before buying if it's a natural fibre material.

Address spills quickly, working from the outside in. This stops a spill from spreading further across a large surface area while you get to it.

    FAQs

Do large synthetic rugs ripple or wave over time the way smaller ones sometimes don't?
Yes, this is more common at larger sizes, particularly with polypropylene, since more surface area means more opportunity for the rug to shift unevenly on the underlay beneath it. A properly fitted rug pad cut to the rug's exact size reduces this considerably, more so than it matters on a smaller rug.

Does an oversized rug need time to lie flat before it looks right, or is that a sign something's wrong?
Some curling at the edges after unrolling is expected, and it settles within a few days once the rug has had time to acclimatise flat on the floor. It's only worth raising as an issue if it hasn't flattened out after a week or so.

Can an oversized rug actually be taken outside to air out or shake, the way a smaller rug can?
Not practically. At this size and weight, shaking it outdoors isn't realistic for one or two people, so airing it out means opening windows and letting the room ventilate instead, or using a vacuum with strong suction to lift dust rather than relying on shaking it out.

What's involved if you need to store an oversized rug for a while, like during a renovation?
It needs to be rolled, never folded, since a fold this large is very likely to leave a permanent crease. Rolling it around a cardboard tube if possible, wrapping it to keep moisture and pests out, and storing it flat or upright in a dry space are the main things that matter, and this is a two-person job given the size.

Does cleaning up a spill on a rug this size take a different approach than a small one?
Yes, mainly because you can't easily lift the rug to clean underneath or check if the spill has soaked through to the floor beneath it. Blotting quickly and working outward from the centre of the spill matters more here, since a large rug sitting on a smaller spill for even a short time gives it more surface area to spread into before you notice.
