Start with the right rug

Decorate with Rugs Effortlessly

This week we sat down with Monique Webber, Home and Styles heads stylist to talk rugs and how to make your home summer ready. Monique says β€œWhen I style a home, I always start from the rug and work my way out”. Rugs are such an integral part of a room, getting the colours and texture right is important, her top design tips:

1. Choose a rug – be mindful of texture, size and colour when selecting your rug. It’s important to get it right, as other elements in the room will draw from it.

2. Layer out – add cushions, throws, poofs that draw from the rug, remember if your rug is blue, it doesn’t mean everything in the room has to be blue, you can draw textures, patterns and designs from the rug.

3. Adore your walls – art it important, don’t leave your walls bear! Be creative with your artwork, whether it be family pictures, framed wall paper or your favorite painting, art work adds a nice touch to a living space.

4. Step back – have a look at the room, does it need extra lighting to brighten corners, how about a mirror to add depth to a room, think about any accents that can be added, but don’t overdo it β€œIf it looks done, it’s done!”.

Monique’s top tips for choosing a rug

Size – β€œIt’s really on-trend at the moment, to have your furniture placed on the rug – to create an island effect”.

Colour – think of the season, in summer, choose summer bright with bold prints for a fresh look, or natural light materials like sisal for a clean and streamlined look.

Texture – with so many options to choose from, it can get confusing! Wool is and will always be a safe option, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box, heat-set polypropylene is the buzz word in design at the moment β€œthese rugs, don’t shed, come in great colours and can be used in high traffic areas, perfect for those with kids and pets”!

Lastly – β€œHave fun with your rug” – with the affordability of rugs in the market today, you can have a rug for every season!
